Alexander City Declares Emergency After Severe Storms; Schools Closed Friday
ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. –
Alexander City was hit hard by severe storms on Thursday afternoon, prompting city officials to declare a state of emergency due to widespread damage. The storm caused significant disruptions, with downed trees, power outages, and damage to buildings across the area.
As of Thursday evening, phone lines, including 911 services, were still down. Emergency calls are being rerouted to Tallapoosa County while crews work to restore communication and clear blocked roads.
Significant Damage in Downtown Area
Mayor Woody Baird reported that the downtown area experienced extensive damage. At least one building lost its storefront, and possibly its roof, due to the high winds. The storm also brought down numerous trees, scattering debris across key roadways and making travel hazardous.
Residents are advised to avoid Airport Drive, Cherokee Road, and Dadeville Road, all of which are near the Central Alabama Community College (CACC) campus and heavily impacted by the storm.
Impact on Central Alabama Community College
Central Alabama Community College President Jeff Lynn stated that up to 20 trees were downed on the campus. Although the roads within the campus are clear, fallen trees continue to block access routes from the city. Power outages have affected parts of the campus, but fortunately, no buildings sustained damage.
During the storm, one class was in session, but no injuries were reported. The college’s baseball team, which was practicing at the time, managed to seek shelter safely before the storm hit.
School Closures and Continued Athletic Events
In response to the storm’s damage, Alexander City Schools announced on social media that all classes would be canceled on Friday. However, scheduled athletic events for Friday afternoon and evening will still take place as planned.
As recovery efforts continue, residents are urged to remain cautious and follow official guidance. Crews are working diligently to restore services and ensure the community’s safety following this severe weather event
